The 4-3-2-1 idea behind good distributions

A stack that plays well is weighted toward small chips: you want plenty of small-blind and big-blind chips for early betting, a solid band of mid chips for raises, and a few big chips to keep stacks compact. This calculator weights the buy-in toward small and mid denominations and only adds a large chip when the buy-in can absorb it.

Why the smallest chip matters most

If your smallest chip is bigger than the small blind, every hand starts with change-making. Set the smallest denomination to the small blind and the game flows without a banker.

Rebuys and the bank

Keep undistributed chips as the bank and sell rebuys from it at the same denominations. If the bank runs dry mid-game, color up: swap players' small chips for big ones and re-issue the small ones.

Skip the chip math entirely

With digital chips there is nothing to distribute: set the buy-in, players join with a code, and every stack, blind, and pot is exact automatically — including rebuys and settlement.

Work from the small blind up, not the buy-in down

The constraint people miss is the smallest chip. Whatever the buy-in is, each player needs enough of the lowest denomination to post small blinds for a full session — about twenty is comfortable. Set that first, and the rest of the distribution follows. Starting from the buy-in and dividing produces stacks that look tidy and run out of ones by the second hour.

Three denominations, four at most

Every extra colour is a value somebody has to remember and a chip somebody has to break mid-hand. A $20 buy-in is completely served by 1, 5 and 25. Adding a 100 to the same game means one chip per player that exists only to be changed later, which slows the table down without adding anything.

Leave a reserve for rebuys

Most sets are sized for the starting stacks and nothing else, and then three people rebuy. Keep roughly one spare stack for every two players out of the initial distribution. Running out of red chips at midnight is the point at which somebody suggests using coins, and the evening does not recover from it.

Check the total against the set you own

The calculator will happily produce a distribution your chip case cannot supply. Before the first hand, multiply the per-player counts by the number of players and compare each colour against what is actually in the box — it takes thirty seconds and catches the problem while it is still fixable.

Distribute before anyone arrives

Counting out eight identical stacks while people are standing around with their coats on is twenty minutes of an evening that has three hours in it. Stack them the night before into whatever the chips came in, and the game starts when the first two players sit down instead of when the last one has been counted out.

Deal the same stack to everyone in a tournament

Identical starting stacks are what make a tournament a tournament — everyone has the same chance from the same position. In a cash game the opposite applies: stacks are whatever people buy in for, and the distribution only has to make each buy-in payable in chips you actually hold. Mixing the two up is why some home tournaments feel unfair before the first hand.

How many chips does each player need?

40–60 chips per player is comfortable for cash games. Fewer than 30 makes betting clunky; more than 80 rarely adds value outside deep tournaments.

How many players can play with a 300-piece set?

Comfortably 4–6 players at 40–60 chips each. Seven or more players usually calls for a 500-piece set.

What denominations should a home cash game use?

Two to four denominations are enough. Start the smallest at the small blind and step up roughly 4–5x each level. For a $20 buy-in, $0.25 and $1 chips are plenty; add $5 chips once buy-ins reach $50 or more.

How many chips should each player start with?

Between 20 and 35 for a home game. Fewer and you cannot bet in small increments; more and the stack stops being countable at a glance.

What if I run out of one colour?

Colour up: trade the smallest denomination in for the next size and take those chips off the table. Improvising a new colour mid-game is how values get forgotten.

Should every player get an identical stack?

In a tournament, yes. In a cash game the stacks are whatever people buy in for, and the distribution just needs to make each buy-in payable in chips you have.
